Sounds
Like:
A return to more familiar sounds after last year's quiet acoustic album,
Release. Disco 3 has much in common with 1999's Nightlife, where Neil Tennant's
trademark melancholy is set against a cutting edge dance sound. However,
the sound takes center stage here, and the variety of inspirations is striking,
from PSB's early '80s albums to contemporary trance.
You May Have Heard: This is the third installment of the band's Disco series,
featuring remixes of songs from Release. It is different from the first
two Disco albums in that only half of it is made up of remixes; the other
half consists of five new songs. Two of these new songs are not all that
new, but reworkings of songs written early in the band's career.
We Fancy: The creative meeting between the old and the new PSB, evident
in a track like "Try It (I'm In Love With A Married Man)." The
lyrics were originally written in the early '80s, and the newly composed
music is wonderful nostalgia for someone who has followed the band from
the start. Other highlights include new versions of "Here" and
"Home And Dry," both far superior to the originals.
We're Not Sure About: The band could be well advised to resist frequent
use of the annoying Cher-style vocoder-button on their recording equipment
next time. Also, perhaps it was not such a good idea to part with the innovative
people at Farrow Design, who did the band's artwork up to last year. The
current sleeve features a decent photograph of London by night, but PSB
album covers used to be instantly recognizable even without the band's name
on them.
Verdict: PSB at their very best. -- Dag Martinsen |
