Pet
Shop Boys have two albums and a "double B-side" single in the
pipeline, and the single features a version of Blur's "Girls and
Boys".
The
duo are currently in a West London studio working on an album of new material
for release next spring by Parlophone. They're expected to work with different
producers on the project.
Meanwhile,
"Alternative Pet Shop Boys" - a compilation of 30 PSB B-sides
arranged in chronological order and spanning the whole of their 10-year
career - has been set for July 3 release. It'll be available as a triple
vinyl LP, a double cassette or a double CD.
The
collection will be preceded on June 12 by the single, which couples the
1986 track "Paninaro" with "In The Night", the B-side
of the Boys' debut single, "Opportunities". The Blur cover is
a live rendition of the song PSB remixed for Blur's own single. The PSBs'
version was recorded on last year's "Discovery" tour and it
appears as a bonus track on the CD format of the single.
The
tracks on "Alternative Pet Shop Boys" - which originally have
the working title "Flippantly" - included the duo's covers of
the Brecht/Weill song "What Keeps Mankind Alive" and Noel Coward's
"If Love Were All", plus their version of "Losing My Mind",
the Tennant/Lowe song that became a 1989 hit for Liza Minelli. The artwork
for the compilation features a "lenticular" photograph of the
pair, which produces a constantly changing images.
The
collection will come with a 30-page illustrated booklet featuring a lengthy
PSB interview with Jon Savage.
