The
second time I saw them was in 1991. We got of to a good start because
we were only four rows from the stage. Now that's what I called
a good view! :)
It
all started with some dramatic music and dancers. There was a guy stabbing
himself, a small girl playing with a globe and guy sitting in a chair
moving his hand around. Then an angel appeared, holding a big old book
which he opened to show us the arcane symbols inscribed in it. At this
point everyone was very quiet, and wondering what the hell is going on
- it was like watching a play!
Suddenly
the lights went down and the first song This Must Be The Place I've
Waited Years To Leave began playing. Chris, Neil and the backing dancers
came on stage, wearing school uniforms. I thought Neil and Chris looked
very cute in their uniforms - I bet it brought back memories for them!
The next song was It's A Sin, where Chris And Neil were dressed
in their night clothes, laying on beds singing, and the dancers were doing
some very strange things! The next song was Losing My Mind. In this sketch
they were still in their night clothes.
This
was followed by What Have I Done To Deserve This?, when Neil comes on
in a yellow suit and Chris wore a pink suit - and they both performed
on surf boards. The next sketch was My October Symphony, where the Pets
came on looking like tourists, and Chris started taking photos of Neil.
Next came We All Feel Better In The Dark, where we were treated to Chris's
dancing!
I
loved the next part - the Boys performed So Sorry I Said. Neil has been
put to sleep, and as he woke up we are into Suburbia. Neil is electrocuted
and Chris is put into a small cage. After the singing has finished, someone
shoots at the clock which blows it up. We are now onto Opportunities.
This is where Chris and Neil are dressed up in loped skinned clothes,
and the dancers are dressed as pigs. This was followed by the instrumental
of West End Girls.
At
this point Chris comes on and starts undressing - which makes everyone
yell out comments like "Sexy Chris" and "Get your knickers
off!". He sings the whole of West End Girls, which is followed by
Always On My Mind. Chris and Neil come on in white suits with wings on
the back. The plot was that they had died and become angels. The final
track was Your Funny Uncle - what a dramatic ending!
I
thought the show was the best one I have seen so far I - really loved
it, and we met quite a few friends. The next tour could be even better
- who knows!
The
show is available on the Performance video. The following extract is taken
from the sleeve notes:- The Pet Shop Boys toured the would in 1991 with
their Performance show. Described by Melody Maker as "an inspired
glorious collision of theatrical imagination, cinematic gesture, art school
nerve topical gravity and unapologetic indulgence", the show was
conceived by controversial opera director David Alden and designed by
innovative theatrical designer David Fielding with choreography by Jacob
Marley. Performance was filmed over three nights at Birmingham NEC, and
Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe performing a selection of their favorite and
most famous songs.
