Hi guys, I've just got back from a top few days seeing Ben Folds Five in
London and the boys in Bournemouth.... The Bournemouth concert was excellent
- I got there about two hours early and after trying unsuccessfully several
times to be let in for the sound check took my place in the queue.... There
were actually very few people queuing and so I managed to get in the front
row in the concert right in front of Chris' keyboard stand! I was worried
the hall was going to be nowhere near full, but a last minute surge of people
ensured it was decently full although not at full capacity...
I cannot say how good those costumes look up close - the lighting was superb
and I also thought it was really cool how you could see all the computers
etc at the side of the stage.... The set was better than I thought it would
be too........ Set list was as all the other shows.... including Footsteps
before Go West at the end....
Neil was in good form, although the audience only really went mad on Always
On My Mind, Neil saying at the end "You still like that one, then." He also
said how it was his first ever visit to Bournemouth and that it was "a nice
bit of ceiling"... I was quite surprised to see how old the audience was
in general, and also surprised that there were several "die hard" fans who
had seem to have never heard of the Internet let alone Introspective...
I don't know what you want.... didn't sound very good live, and I also thought
that Dusty's words sounded a bit out of sync with the general flow of the
song on What have I done to deserve this... I also noticed this listening
to the Atlanta webcast.... The only other slight disappointment is that
Left to my own devices didn't seem to be as "bouncy" as it used to be -
the new mix seems to have taken some of the bass out of the song which makes
it harder to dance to....
Also one of the signers was missing at this gig. The crowed loved Se a vida
e: I will get on my soap box here and say this is where it all went wrong!
Se a vida e is a brilliant song - its happy - its not too camp/controversial
etc etc etc - and everyone I know loves it.....
I really think if, for whatever reason, it had been a bigger hit the boys
would be more popular in the UK today - it was a good video - perhaps the
biggest mistake the boys made was to do minimal promotion on Bilingual in
general... and I think Se a vida e should have been the first single....
Anyway, afterwards I went to the stage door and sure enough out came Neil
and Chris - I got them and Dainton to sign my programme and Neil just asked
what there was to do in Bournemouth etc.... Chris said nothing. That's it,
sorry if its too long........ Tom
